Driver’s Licence Basic Qualifications
When you are going to apply for your driver’s licence or identification card, the registry that is processing your application must verify your identity and residency through a strict confirmation process:
- Any applicant that is under the age of 18 that is not self-supporting or married must provide the registry agent with consent from a parent of guardian
- Any applicant that has a medical condition or vision impairment that may adversely affect their ability to drive must discuss this matter with Driver Records by placing a call to the toll-free RITE direct line at 310-0000 followed by 780-427-8230
- Applicants must also be legal residents of Canada and Alberta
Alberta’s Graduated Driver Licensing Program
The Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program in Alberta has changed the way we license new drivers. The GDL program has been developed to ensure that all new drivers, regardless of their age, get the skills, experience and support they need to be able to handle the complex task of driving. Driver Knowledge Testing
All knowledge testing can be done at the Registry West using the Automated Driver Knowledge Testing System. This means the system here will generate your test at the time you take it. The system will then select 30 questions at random from the test question bank. In order to pass the exam you must answer 25 of the 30 questions correctly. We can also of an audio assisted capability at the testing stations that will read the questions and answer choices to you if you require so.For on-line operator’s handbooks please visit the Alberta Transportation’s website.
Driver (Road) Testing
Road Test are performed by a licensed driver examiner, the scheduling is arranged by registry agents at the Registry West.
Road test fees can vary by location and are determined jointly by the driver examiner and the registry agent. To view our road test fees please visit our road tests page. The registry agents here at Registry West will provide road test information sheets that outline a number of considerations including vehicle requirements, client eligibility, fees and no-show/cancellation policies. Air Brake Knowledge Testing
The registry agents here at Registry West can conduct the knowledge testing component of the Alberta Air Brake Course. Once you have successfully completed the knowledge test the registry agents here at Registry West will endorse the drivers licence with a condition code Q (Airbrake Endorsement).
