When applying for a new drivers licence or ID card or Alberta Health Care for the first time you will need to bring in the drivers licence form the province or country you are coming from (depending on the country you may not be able to exchange the Drivers licence for an Alberta one without going through a written test and road test) and proof of identity. Birth certificates, passports, work or study permits, major bill in your name, lease agreement, bank statements that comes in your name these are just a few examples. Once again prices can vary. There is no fee for getting an Alberta Health Care card.
When you are going to apply for your driver’s licence or identification card, the registry that is processing your application must verify your identity and residency through a strict confirmation process:
Any applicant that is under the age of 18 that is not self-supporting or married must provide the registry agent with consent from a parent of guardian
Any applicant that has a medical condition or vision impairment that may adversely affect their ability to drive must discuss this matter with Driver Records by placing a call to the toll-free RITE direct line at 310-0000 followed by 780-427-8230
Applicants must also be legal residents of Canada and Alberta
The Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program in Alberta has changed the way we license new drivers. The GDL program has been developed to ensure that all new drivers, regardless of their age, get the skills, experience and support they need to be able to handle the complex task of driving. Written knowledge tests assess knowledge of Alberta traffic laws. Knowledge tests are required for all licence classes (with the exception of class 5), air brake endorsement, the S-endorsement, and the Safety Fitness Certificate (SFC) Compliance test. Registry West facilitates knowledge tests for a fee, please contact one of our agents for details.
PLEASE NOTE: The daily cut-off for knowledge testing is ONE HOUR BEFORE CLOSING. This is 4:00pm Monday-Friday, 2:00pm on Saturdays.
Road tests are performed by a licensed driver examiner, the scheduling is arranged by registry agents at the Registry West.
Road test fees can vary by location and are determined jointly by the driver examiner and the registry agent. To view our road test fees please visit our road tests page. Once you have completed the Air Brake Course the registry agents here at Registry West can conduct the knowledge testing component of the Alberta Air Brake Course. Once you have successfully completed the knowledge test the registry agents here at Registry West will endorse the drivers licence with a condition code Q (Airbrake Endorsement).
