Licence Classes in Alberta

Class 1 Licence
This licence permits operators to drive:
- Operators can drive any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles not including a motorcycle
- Operators can also drive class 6 type vehicles for learning purposes only
The minimum licensing or learning age is 18.
Class 2 Licence
This licence permits operators to drive:
- Any type of bus
- Any motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicle that any holder of a class 3, 4 and 5 licence may operate
- Class 1 and 6 type vehicles, for learning purposes only
The minimum licensing or learning age is 18.
Applicants looking to acquire a class 2 license must pass a vision screening, road and written test and medical report. Applicants must require a airbrake certificate for vehicles with airbrakes.
The vehicle used to administer the road test must be a bus with a seating capacity exceeding 24 including the operator.
Class 3 Licence
This licence permits operators to drive:
- Any motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles that any holder of a class 5 licence may operate
- A single motor vehicle that has three or more axles
- A motor vehicle that has three or more axles towing a trailer that has one or more axles as long as the trailer is not equipped with airbrakes
- Class 2 and 4 type vehicles can be operated as long as there is no passengers in the vehicle
- For learning only vehicles under class 1, 2, and 6 can be operated
Any holder of a Class 3 operator’s licence shall NOT operate a motor vehicle:
- A vehicle that has a seating capacity of more than 15, while that vehicle is transporting any person in addition to the operator
- That has transport passengers that are for hire
The minimum licensing or learning age for this licence is 18.
Applicants looking to acquire a class 2 license must pass a vision screening, road and written test and medical report. Applicants must require a airbrake certificate for vehicles with airbrakes.
The vehicle used to administer the road test must be any motor vehicle having three or more axles.
Class 4 Licence
This licence permits operators to drive:
- An ambulance, bus or taxi where the seating capacity is not over 24, excluding the operator
- All motor vehicles that are included under Class 5
- For learning purposes only all motor vehicles included under class 1, 2,3 and 6 may be operated
The minimum licensing or learning age for this licence is 18.
Applicants looking to acquire a class 2 license must pass a vision screening, written test and medical report. Applicants only require a road test if the operator does not already posses a class 1, 2, or 3 licence.
The vehicle used to administer the road test must be any two axle motor vehicle excluding motorcycles.
Class 5 Licence
This licence permits operators to drive:
- A single motor vehicle with two axles this excludes motorcycles
- A motor vehicle with two axles towing a trailer that has one or more axles as long as the trailer is not equipped with airbrakes
- A recreational vehicle or any combination of recreational vehicle and a trailer as long as the trailer does not have more than two axles and is not equipped with air brakes
- A moped
- For learning purposes only all motor vehicles included under class 1, 2,3, 4 and 6 may be operated
Any holder of a Class 5 operator’s licence shall NOT operate a motor vehicle:
- That has a seating capacity of more than 15 passengers, while that vehicle is transporting any person in addition to the operator
- That has transport passengers that are for hire
The minimum learning age for a class 5 licence is 14.
The minimum licensing age for a class 5 licence is 16.
Applicants looking to acquire a class 5 licence must pass a road test.
The vehicle used to administer the road test must be any two axle motor vehicle excluding motorcycles.
Class 6 Licence
This licence permits operators to drive:
- A moped or motorcycle
- For learning purposes only all motor vehicles included under class 5 may be operated
The minimum learning and licensing age for a class 5 licence is 16.
Applicants who already have been issued a class 5 licence will be required to complete a class 6 knowledge test and road test. Applicants who do not have any class of licence will need to enter the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program and will need to do a class 7 knowledge test as well as a vision screening. Applicant also must operate a motorcycle as a learner for a minimum of one year. In order to exit the learner stage and become a probationary rider you are required to write a class 6 knowledge test as well as take a class 6 road test. In order to exit the GDL program you must hold a probationary licence for a minimum of 2 years and pass an advanced road test.
The vehicle used to administer the road test must be a motorcycle that does not have a sidecar.
Class 7 Licence
This licence permits operators to drive:
- A moped
- For learning purposes only, a motor vehicle referred to in the class 5 category
- If the operator is at least 16 years of age they may operate a motorcycle as a learner only
The minimum learning and licensing age for a class 7 licence is 14.
Applicants looking to acquire a class 7 licence must pass a written test and a vision screening.
