A marriage officiant is someone who has the legal ability to perform marriages within the province and has been registered with Alberta Vital Statistics. There are two types of wedding ceremonies and there are no legal differences between the two. Religious ceremonies are performed by a religious representative as long as they are registered under Vital Statistics. Civil ceremonies are performed by a marriage commissioner that are chosen by the Government of Alberta. A registry agent can provide you a list of marriage commissioners.
